IIHF Announces 16-Country NHL 20 World Championship
# OF NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
After the cancellation of the 2020 World Hockey Championships earlier this year, the IIHF has decided to take their tournament to the virtual ice this spring.
Beginning on May 15, 2020, fans from the 16 nations that were qualified for the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be given the chance to represent their country in this tournament. All games will be played online, using both PS4 and Xbox One consoles.
The first phase of the tournament will consist of qualification rounds that will be run online from May 15th to 22nd. Once a national PS4 and Xbox champion has been determined for each country, they will compete in a playoff beginning May 29th, and the world champion will be crowned on June 5th.
Both the national champions and the playoff finalists will have the chance to win prize money, hockey merchandise and ‘money can’t buy’ VIP-experiences. Full details of the prizes have not yet been released.
“We very much value our partnership with Infront as, thanks to its growing expertise in esports, we are able to bring ice hockey action to fans’ homes in a new and engaging manner” said René Fasel, IIHF President. “We look forward to seeing the fans create their own destiny and become stars of the virtual tournament by representing their home nation.”
The playoff tournament will be streamed live on the IIHF’s Twitch channel. Fans around the world will also be able to follow the action on the IIHF’s social media channels.
Registration opens on May 8, 2020, and the competition will kick-off on May 15, 2020.
Players will begin by competing in qualification tournaments for their respective countries starting on May 15, 2020. National champions will be crowned for each country on both consoles. These national champions will qualify for the playoff round, where they will compete for the world championship that will take place on June 5th.
The entire tournament will be played online using the Online Versus mode in EA Sports NHL 20.
The format of the qualification and playoff rounds has not yet been determined.
