NHL 19 tournaments are popping up left and right as the Winnipeg Jets become the next NHL franchise to host an esports activation. Unlike the Capitals and Lightning, however, the Jets are opting for a stand-alone tournament.
This event will pit the best NHL 19 gamers in Canada and the USA against each other for a piece of the $7,500 CAD cash prize pool. Sorry European gamers, you won’t be participating in this one.
Players will attempt to qualify for the live finals on February 18, 2019 at Bell MTS Place by playing through two stages of online qualifiers.
Open online qualifiers will be held across two weekends:
Qualifiers A & B: January 19th & 20th
Qualifiers C & D: January 26th & 27th
Once the top 12 players of the open qualifiers are determined (6 players per console), they will be placed in another bracket and play through a closed online qualifier session to determine the Top 2 Finalists (one per console) that will play for the grand prize.
The two players that make it to the Grand Finals will play their games live at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Once a winner is crowned, the Finalists will then play a friendly 2-vs-2 showcase match featuring a pair of Winnipeg Jets players that have still yet to be announced. If we were to take a guess though, we’d put our money on video-gaming fanatic (and decent hockey player) Patrik Laine to be one of them.
Fans can watch individual players live-stream their games during the online qualifiers (dates below) by visiting NHL 19’s Twitch page. The Jets will also be broadcasting the Grand Finals and Showcase Match (02/18/2019) on their official Twitch channel.

The Winnipeg Jets NHL 19 Tournament consists of 4 open online qualifiers (2 per console) and 2 closed online qualifiers (1 per console). Each qualifier will start at 1:00 pm EST and will run until a winner is decided. The winner from each open qualifier will automatically advance to the corresponding console’s closed qualifier. The 2nd through 8th place players in each open qualifier will earn points based on their ranking. Points will be distributed as follows:
2nd: 25 pts
3rd: 12 pts
4th: 6 pts
5th & 6th: 3 pts
7th & 8th: 1 pt
After the open qualifiers, the 4 players with the most total points on each console will also qualify for the corresponding closed qualifier. A total of 6 players per console will advance to each closed qualifier: the winner of each qualifier (2) and then the 4 players with the most total points.
Tiebreaker: If two or more players have the same number of total points at the end of the open qualifiers, the player with the highest placing in any of the open qualifiers will be ranked higher. If both players’ highest placing in any of the open qualifiers is the same, the player that achieved the highest placing earliest will be ranked higher.
Once the 12 players (6 per console) competing in the closed qualifiers have been determined, they will be placed in a seeded bracket and play until a winner is crowned. The winner of each closed qualifier will then be invited to a live, 1v1 match hosted at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba to compete for their share of the $7,500 cash prize pool.
Each open qualifier will consist of a double elimination bracket. All matches in open qualifiers are Best-of-1 game series, with the exception of the upper and lower bracket finals, which will be a Best-of-3 format.
Each closed qualifier will consist of a double elimination, Best-of-3 format bracket. Players will be seeded, with the highest seeds going to the winners of the open qualifiers. The players that qualified based on points will be seeded #3 and onwards based on their point totals. The winner of each closed qualifier will move on to play in the Grand Finals at Bell MTS Place on February 18, 2019.
The Grand Final will be a Best-of-5 game series. Each of the Finalists will be paired up with a Winnipeg Jets NHL player in the 2-vs-2 celebrity showcase match.
