To create these power rankings, each of the 5 staff members independently puts together their version of what the Top 15 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each. The player ranked first is given 15 points, second gets 14, third gets 13 and so on down to No. 15, which gets one point. Any player on this list that did not appear in a writers’ Top 15 is shown as rank #16 and received zero points. These points are totaled and sorted to create the list that you see above.

1. Erik “i_Eki_i” Tammenpää

Last Month: N/A

The NHL 18 Gaming World Champion still has his foot on the gas going into 2019, and he has lost only once in his last 28 NHL esports games. This year, he was the first player to qualify for the Caps esports Face-off after going undefeated (8-0) while beating top players like xOdiee, xDoumi, Bouch, Regs84, and eken45jr along the way. It’s a shame that Europeans were not allowed to participate in the other events that have popped up since his qualification. The team here is fairly confident that if he were eligible to qualify for the Jets or Red Wings events, he would have a few more first-place finishes under his belt already.

Eki is the best NHL 19 player in the world right now. But the gap is closing between himself and our pick for #2.

2. Justin “Regs84” Reguly

Last Month: N/A

Easily the highest riser from the start of NHL 19 in the eSports scene, Regs is the player of the year so far in NHL 19. He has been dominant in almost every tournament he’s played in this year. His incredible run this past month where he qualified for the Jets and Caps events, and won WorldGaming’s $500 tournament was unheard of. His ability to adapt to his opponent is what sets him apart. He has been a force thus far and is going to be incredibly fun to watch throughout the remainder of the NHL 19 esports season.

3. Matthew “Yung Gren” Grenier

Last Month: N/A

Winning the Leafs Gaming League earlier this month had Gren off to a big start in NHL 19, however, after some past controversies were brought to light, he’s been barred from competing in many of this season’s NHL esports events. This is why it was so tough to rank him against the European players on this list. Regardless, he remains one of the best in the game. He’s proven time and time again that he shows up when it matters and we have no doubt he would’ve qualified for both Washington and Winnipeg if he was able to compete. We’re all looking forward to seeing him compete in the Minnesota Wild tournament this weekend, as well as the 2019 NHL Gaming World Championship later this year.

4. Joshua “Joshfearless” D’Eri

Last Month: N/A

Joshfearless is the definition of a grinder. This guy will play in multiple tournaments and money games at any given time and place. He’s not scared of anyone and has been playing competitively for as long as we can remember. This month he finally broke through and knocked off Finnish-favourite ‘PleeMaker’ to punch his ticket to Washington, as well as an invite to the Winnipeg closed qualifier later this month. He also won and placed third in back-to-back WorldGaming $500 tournaments to boot. It’s only a matter of time before the floodgates open for Josh and he starts bringing home championships.

5. David “JrPens91” Roebuck

Last Month: N/A

Love or hate his playstyle, JrPens always finds a way to get it done as he’s been consistently placing well in every major tournament. He fell just short in the losers bracket final in the second Caps qualifier, but then punched his ticket to the Winnipeg closed qualifier as well as the Red Wings Top 16 finals. He’s another player who needs that breakthrough tournament win to take him to the next level. By the looks of his play so far, there is no reason to think that it won’t happen soon.

6. Henrik “eken45jr” Eklund

Last Month: N/A

A relatively unknown player in North America, eken45jr put on a show in his run to the finals of the Caps esports Face-off. He lost an epic winners bracket final to Eki in overtime, and then beat Regs in OT as well to book his ticket to Washington. Viewers, players and esports organizations will have their eyes fixed on this guy during the Capitals’ LAN event to see if he can follow up his incredible performance during the qualifier.

7. Brian “Keso_Paghuni” Donald

Last Month: N/A

Another veteran of competitive NHL games, he finally had his moment this past month by going on the most ridiculous run we have seen in a long time. He put an entire continent on his back and knocked out five straight European players to secure his spot in the Caps esports Face-off final. He also just made it to the Jets’ closed qualifier, and nobody would be shocked if (and when) he qualifies for the Red Wings finals as well.

8. Josh “HK_OFs” Fuss

Last Month: N/A

HK (or HockeyKings) is another break out player in NHL 19. When he isn’t yelling on stream, he’s been “quietly” dominating the recent qualifiers. So far, he’s pulled out a Top 6 finish in the Caps second qualifier, while also managing to win the first Winnipeg qualifier securing his spot in the closed playoffs. He loses games he shouldn’t at times but has shown he can beat nearly anyone. He’s among the best when it comes to scoring, and when this kid gets a little more experience under this belt he’s going to be lethal.

9. Michael “Miviens” Viens

Last Month: N/A

Coming off a championship in the 2018 Snider Cup, Mivs has had an up and down year to start NHL 19. Prior to the Jets event, he seemed to defeat himself in many of the qualifiers. He finished fourth in the first Caps qualifier, followed by back-to-back early exits in the next two that had people wondering what happened. He bounced back by dominating the Jets qualifiers and securing a spot in the closed playoffs. People are also quick to forget that he placed very high in the Leafs Gaming League. Once he finds his game, he can easily become a Top 5 contender this year.

10. Roni “MrNipsuli” Kaján

Last Month: N/A

Another Finnish player, MrNipsuli came Top 24 in the first Washington qualifier but bounced back in the second one by defeating PleeMaker, Hansulinho, HK_OFs, and JrPens to book his ticket to D.C. Ever since we noticed him his name keeps popping up, and we’re excited to see how he plays in Washington and the upcoming NHL Gaming World Championship.

11. Tyler “DaddyPadre” Stewart

Last Month: N/A

Placing second at the Leafs Gaming League finals earlier this year, Padre has shown that he’s still one of the best players in the world despite being one of the oldest players in the scene. But with only one Top 8 finish in recent tournaments, he’s been coming up a bit short lately. The big question around Padre is whether he still has the motivation and dedication to play as much as the other, younger players on the list.

12. Samuel “Canadiens-27” Landry

Last Month: N/A

Canadiens started off the year with a great performance at Leafs Gaming Day, losing to Padre in the finals. Since then, he’s struggled to win consistently in the new year. He has not placed very well in any of the Capitals qualifiers, but he turned it around in the Jets’ tournament and cruised into the closed qualifier. He’s one of the more offensively gifted players in the NHL esports scene, and he will need strong showings through the next few events to remain on the list.

13. Paul “PleeMaker” Arontie

Last Month: N/A

One of Europe’s best has been on the verge of qualifying for multiple major tournaments. He was busy travelling during the first Caps qualifier, and in the second one, he was outed before the round of 32. He fell just short again in the third Caps qualifier after losing to Joshfearless and Keso_Paghuni in back-to-back thrillers. Look for him to have a strong fourth Caps qualifier or to lock up a spot in finals of the Bolts Chel Challenge this weekend.

14. John Wayne “Johnwaynee90” Casagranda

Last Month: N/A

COMEEEEE ONNNN MANNN! Johnwaynee, who finished 3rd at the 2018 NHL GWC, has run into a few problems this year due to his residency in Alaska. A few of the big tournaments this year have barred Americans living in Hawaii and Alaska from competing, which is a damn shame. He has yet to place inside the Top 10 in a Caps qualifier, but he locked up a spot at the Red Wings finals by winning his bracket. He needs to have a big showing in the upcoming events to hold off the guys on the outside of this list looking in.

15. Kristian “Kriketsi17” Veijola

Last Month: N/A

Kriketsi has gone on a few long runs this season against the toughest competition. In the first Caps qualifier, he finished sixth and followed that up with a fourth place finish in the next one, losing to JrPens in the semifinals. He’s very talented and nobody will be shocked to see him book his ticket to either Washington or Tampa Bay in the coming weeks.
