Columbus’ announcement of their NHL 19 esports tournament came out of the ‘blue’ earlier today. In collaboration with smash.gg and local celebrity Andrew ‘Nasher‘ Telfer, the Blue Jackets will host online qualifiers later this month and a live final event at Nationwide Arena in early April. The two finalists will compete for their share of the $8,500 USD prize pool, tickets to the Blue Jackets game against the Bruins and an opportunity to beat Nasher in a game of NHL 19.
The CBJ NHL 19 Tournament will consist of two online qualifiers – one per console – and then a live final for the winner of each qualifier.
This event is open to Canadian and American gamers (sorry Euros). The prize pool will be skewed heavily towards the two finalists, but there will be a consolation prize of $500 for the runners-up in each qualifier. The grand champion will win $5,000 and 2nd place will take home $2,500.
The timing of the qualifiers overlaps with the online qualifiers of the 2019 NHL GWC. However, the GWC qualifiers span a full four weeks, so players should be able to manage their time appropriately to ensure that they can participate in every event. The finals of this tournament will take place live on April 1st at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Fans can watch individual players live-stream their qualification games during the online qualifiers (dates below) by visiting NHL 19’s Twitch page. The Blue Jackets will also be broadcasting the Finals (04/01/2019) on their official Twitch channel.
The CBJ NHL 19 Tournament consists of two online qualifiers (one per console) and a live Grand Final that will be held at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The winner of each online qualifier will attend the live final event and compete for their share of the prize pool.
Each qualifier will consist of a double elimination bracket. All matches will be Best-of-1 game series, except for the finals between the Top 2 players, which will be a Best-of-3. Online qualifiers will be hosted by smash.gg.
The Finals will be a Best-of-5 game series between the two finalists.
